Nitronic - 60

Nitronic 60 is a metal that can be used for a variety of applications. This fully austenitic alloy was originally intended to be used as a high-temperature alloy, and as a result, it exhibits excellent high-temperature properties at temperatures up to 1800 oF. Nitronic 60 has an oxidation resistance that is comparable to Type 309 S.S. and significantly superior to Type 304 S.S. The wear and galling resistance of this grade are among its most notable characteristics. The additions of silicon and manganese have created a matrix in this alloy that prevents wear, galling, and fretting even when the alloy is in the annealed state. Cold working the material results in higher strengths, and it retains its full austenitic properties even after extensive cold working is done. This process does not improve the anti-galling properties of carbon steels or some stainless steels, as is typical for these materials. Adding cold or hot work to the material results in increased strength and hardness, while the wear resistance does not decrease noticeably as a result of the process. The addition of chromium and nickel makes it corrosion resistant to the same extent as 304 and 316 stainless steels while having approximately twice the yield strength.

Because of the high mechanical strength of annealed parts, they can be made with smaller cross sections to save weight, and they can be made with thinner stock to save money. In addition to having twice the yield strength of AISI 304, NITRONIC 60 is a stainless steel alloyed with silicon and manganese. It is resistant to wear, galling, and fretting because of the increased silicon and manganese content. It is suitable for use at temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius. A steel's corrosion resistance is typically measured in millimetres per inch of thickness (mm/in). Chloride pitting resistance, stress corrosion cracking resistance, and crevice corrosion resistance are all higher than those of AISI 316L when tested in the lab under these conditions.

APPLICATION :

Applications using NITRONIC 60 are valve stems, seats and trim, fastening systems, screening, pins, bushings and roller bearings, pump shafts and rings.

Other uses include wear plates, rails guides, and bridge pins. This alloy provides a significant lower cost way to fight wear and galling compared to Nickel or Cobalt based alloys.
