Stainless steel grains with a 50% austenitic and 50% ferritic microstructure are called duplex stainless steels. In comparison to ferritic and austenitic stainless steels, this type of steel is preferred due to its superior strength. Thinner sections can be made using duplex stainless steel, saving weight. For structural and pressure vessel applications, duplex stainless steel is preferred.
